STONES IN WATER BY: DONNA JO NAPOLI

THEME

Perseverance is an important theme in Stones in Water. In order to survive the treachorous camps and to be able to walk all those miles home, Roberto was going to have to persevere if he wanted to live. The journey was going to be far from easy, with many obstacles that would occur, without thinking positive and never giving up there would be no way for Roberto to survive. The theme in this book shows us that if we believe and want to concure something we can. Samuele didnt show as much perseverance as Roberto did because he was not as positive, the result was death. Roberto persevered every step of the way and because of that was able to concure something nobody would think could.

CHARACTERS

Roberto is a fourteen year old boy. At first he did not always think before he spoke, and to his friends he was not known for his cleverness. But, after being captured by the German soliders he was practically forced into being a brave, clever, and fast-thinking boy in order to survive. He changed from a boy into an adult.
Samuele is a jewish boy who was also captured by German soldiers. I would describe Samuele as a boy who put people before himself. He would always tell Roberto bed time stories until Roberto would fall alseep. He practically risked his life to save Robertos boot from being taken by the other Italian boys.
As a whole, both boys treated eachother very loyal. When ever one was in trouble they would then risk their own safety to be able to stay with the other.

PLOT

Roberto was a regular boy just going to a movie in Munich on a normal Saturday afternoon. His whole life took a turn for the worst, when a group of Germany soldiers raided the theater. Then, he and his friend, Samuele, a jew, were taken to a work camp with little food and poor shelter. When Samuele dies, Roberto decides to run away. After having to eat slugs to encountering a wolf Roberto had to endure many obstacles. While trying to row back home he finds an Italian solider who was also trying to get back home. So, both of them row many, many days in order to return back to Italy.stones_in_water(4)[1].jpg

CONFLICT

The conflict in Stones in Water is man vs. man. Roberto and the others in the work camps were forced to work all day long without much to eat at all in the gruesoming weather. They had to do this because they were forced to. They had to defend for themselves. It was all of them against the Germany and Italian soldiers. To survive this conflict they had to do what the soldiers said. Throughout the entire book, Roberto is facing challenges.
SETTING
Stones in Water takes place in the early 1940's during World War II. The story begins in Venice, Italy but the setting of the story then frequently changes to areas in Austria, Ukraine, Italy, and other countries in Emap-of-europe[2].jpgurope.
